IDEA stands for the International Door Association Education Foundation — the educational arm of the IDA, the garage door industry's primary trade association. IDEA administers certification examinations that test technicians on installation procedures, safety protocols, mechanical systems, and current industry standards.
Passing the IDEA exam means a technician has demonstrated competency across the core knowledge areas required for safe, professional garage door work. It's the closest thing the industry has to a standardized credential — and it's administered independently, not by the employer.
